What does a CredentialledDiabetes Educator (CDE) do?

A CDE helps individuals manage their diabetes effectively. They support people with all types of diabetes, including: ​

  • Pre-diabetes

  • Type 1 Diabetes

  • Type 2 Diabetes

  • Gestational Diabetes

  • Other forms like LADA and MODY

 

​Key responsibilities involve personalising care plans to manage diet, exercise, and medication, and providing guidance on healthy eating and carbohydrate counting. Provide education about diabetes types, causes, and complications. Training on blood glucose monitoring, insulin use, and diabetes devices.  A CDE tracks progress and adjusts plans, involving the multi-disciplinary teams. Effective diabetes management is achieved through close collaboration with doctors, dietitians, optometrists, and podiatrists to ensure comprehensive care.

NEWLY DIAGNOSED WITH TYPE 1 OR TYPE 2 DIABETES

Are you newly diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes and you feel the world is crumbling around you?  Where to get the best information to gain knowledge about your condition?  What to eat, to blood glucose monitor or not to, to start physical activity or not to? Look no further, Karin will be able to empower you with all the skills you need to manage your own condition and steps to take to prevent any longterm complications.

TRAVELLING WITH DIABETES

Are you heading on a holiday but you don't know what to do with your medication and what you need in regards to Dr's letters etc?  Talk to your Diabetes Educator to assist you in everything you need to know when travelling with Diabetes.

STARTING ON INSULIN
Is your doctor considering starting you on Insulin, but you're not sure about the whole process?  Your Diabetes Educator will be able to educate you on everything you need to know around Injection technique, storage of your insulin, sharps disposal, when to inject your insulin and also how to titrate your insulin to get the best control.
POORLY CONTROLLED DIABETES

Is your Diabetes poorly controlled according to your GP but you are feeling that you are doing everything to better manage your Diabetes?  Your Diabetes Educator can assist you to improve your Diabetes control.  Diabetes is an Individual condition and what works for one person will not work for everyone.  

INTERESTED IN CONTINUOUS GLUCOSE MONITORING OR  INSULIN PUMP THERAPY

If you are interested in Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems or Insulin Pump therapy and ways you can access it, your Credentialled Diabetes Educator and Certified Pump Trainer will be able to assist you in this.

 

Karin is a Certified Pump trainer for Medtronic-, Tandem T-Slim- and Omnipod Insulin Pumps.

NEWLY DIAGNOSED WITH GESTATIONAL DIABETES
If you are pregnant and your doctor has just advised you that you have Gestational Diabetes, contact your Diabetes Educator to get information on what to do next.

  • Any recent blood tests

  • A list of your most recent medication

  • Your blood glucose monitor if you have one

  • Your username and password for your Carelink, Diasend or Dexcom account if you are on an Insulin Pump

  • Last but not least a positive attitude to learn!
